At Waters and Acland we are dedicated to the pursuit of ‘Perfection in the making’. Creating fine furniture, hand crafted to the very highest standards of craftsmanship and design. We believe passionately that this ethos should guide our teaching and furniture school facilities. Learning side by side with our highly skilled cabinet makers and award winning designer, the motivated team at Waters and Acland strive to give all our students the skills needed to make furniture designing and making a life changing hobby or complete new career choice.
With a background in Fine art and over a decades experience designing and making furniture Will Acland heads all aspects of design within both the commercial cabinet making workshop and the furniture school. As a designer of fine furniture his reputation is growing for original contemporary design with a coherent aesthetic – whilst demonstrating an awareness of the history of furniture design. Through the teaching of traditional drawing techniques as well as Computer Aided Design packages Will endeavours to bring out the artist in all our students regardless of their starting point, be it trained artist or complete design beginner.
Having started his career by taking a full time paid furniture making course Oliver is very aware as to what constitutes good and bad when teaching fine furniture. It is partly these experiences that drive Oliver to create the best Fine Furniture School in the UK. Small class numbers; one on one tuition; working alongside a genuine commercial cabinet making workshop; a devotion to mastering hand skills; the encouragement and development of each individuals design skills are all areas Oliver is committed to providing each and every student that attends the Waters and Acland Furniture School.
As a timed served master cabinet maker Graham brings to teaching a wealth of experience and skill in all aspects of furniture making. He now spends all of his time teaching but in recent years he was lead cabinet maker of the Guild Mark winning ‘Sukiru’ cabinet and had a significant hand in the creation of our other Guild Mark winning piece, the ‘Cunard’ cabinet. His patience seems to know no bounds and his desire for all our students to bring the best out of themselves is clear. Graham is lead tutor on all our cabinet making courses.
As ‘master maker’ within the commercial workshop Tim is responsible for creating award winning commissioned furniture under the pressures that exist within a genuine commercial cabinet making workshop. A hugely talented and knowledgeable craftsman Tim will encourage our students to see all the commercial projects being made throughout the process. Tim hosts Q and A sessions within the commercial bench room which is connected and open to the student bench rooms. All those attending our cabinet making courses will benefit from Tims vast experience as a high level cabinet maker.
As a professional Fashion illustrator, lecturer and skilled artist Holly has a lifetime of experience representing the visual world on both paper and digitally. Her role within the school is to coach the students in drawing techniques, encouraging all to embrace the need to sketch more often and better. Through an (optional) series of still life lessons even the most inexperienced artist can start to represent their ideas on paper and begin to develop a design language and style of their own.
