These Tool Prep & Sharpening tutorials are suitable for those starting out on their woodworking journey but will also prove hugely valuable to experienced woodworkers that struggle to get consistent results from their hand tools. They are also brilliant preparatory exercises for those intending to come on one of our long format ‘designer maker’ courses, short ‘make a’ type courses such as ‘make a table’ or ‘make a dovetail box’ courses, or before purchasing one of our other online project plans to try at home.

Equipment Required
- Planes and Chisels to flatten and sharpen – We apply this to all new and old planes and chisels brought into the workshop
- Float Glass (minimum 10mm thick, 15mm preferable) NOT TOUGHENED OR TEMPERED GLASS! Available from many online glass suppliers or from Workshop Heaven
- A longer piece of float glass (850mm x 230mm) which is required / highly recommended for plane sole flattening, especially large planes, but we state this process as being optional for home use.
- 3M Sharpening Film (100, 40, 15, 9, 3 Micron. Extra 100 micron sheets if you have a lot of regrinding and plane flattening to do) – Workshop Heaven (hard to get outside of the UK but they do ship internationally).
- A rubber roller (Not essential, but very handy) – Veritas Honing Guide
- GT85 lubrication Spray (or WD-40)
- A scraper to remove old film
- Some thinners to remove glue residue from the old film (acetone, turpentine, white spirit)
