Spend five days making a side table designed by award-winning furniture designer Will Acland, while developing the accuracy and techniques at the heart of fine furniture making.
Originally developed as an early project for our full-time Designer Maker students, the table is both a refined piece of furniture and an excellent teaching project. You’ll work through accurate preparation, hand and machine-cut joinery, assembly and finishing to complete your own table during the week.
The course is suitable for beginners as well as makers with previous woodworking experience. All tools and timber are provided, and your finished table and test pieces are yours to take home.
Rather than learning individual techniques in isolation, the week is built around making a complete piece of furniture.
The table introduces a range of fundamental joints and processes, giving you the opportunity to understand not only how they are made, but how accuracy at each stage affects the finished piece.
By the end of the week you’ll leave with your own finished table and a set of skills that can be carried directly into future projects.
Five days of practical furniture making, covering the core processes from preparing components through to final finishing.
Cut mortise and tenon, bridle and half-lap joints using both hand tools and machinery.
Develop greater control of hand tools for accurate jointing, preparation and refinement.
Learn how to dimension and prepare components accurately before moving into joinery.
Understand the information contained in workshop drawings and use it throughout the making process.
Develop an organised approach to dry fitting, glue-up and accurate final assembly.
Prepare surfaces carefully through sanding and learn how to apply the final finish to your table.
We keep our short courses to a maximum of five students, giving your tutor time to demonstrate techniques clearly and work with you individually throughout the week.
The course takes place in our dedicated short-course workshop alongside the main Designer Maker bench room, creating a relaxed environment centred around making, learning and developing your skills.
